“The Good & The Crooked (& The High & The Horny)” – Joe Stamm Band (2020) [english]

If there is a genre that takes the energy and fun of concerts and tries to bring it to disk here is country rock and red dirt. That country very anchored to the roots but that fades into the modernity of honky tonk and street rock and roll. Do you want to know how this kind of music sounds? What would it be like to feel in a dusty live club or on a beautiful lawn for one of those American festivals where the fun flows by the river? Here is the title track and first song of the debut of the Joe Stamm Band. Rock melted to the roots, guitars whizzing from one box to another of your stereos, a powerful and incisive voice and lots of lyrical irony. A departure with the proverbial bang! The leader Joe grew up in the rural Midwest and has within himself that narrative ability of the genre, influenced by real life stories but has contaminated his sound with the soul more properly rock of the good part of Nashville. A record supported by the guitars rushes away fast, never giving the impression of getting tired or resting on laurels, a bit like the career of the Joe Stamm Band in recent years always supporting big names, with word of mouth to act as a flywheel. Up to this fall where they will be among the participants in one of the most anticipated festivals in recent years : Whiskey Myer’s Firewater Festival, organized by the Texan band that gives the name to the whole (one of the best southern rock albums of Whiskey Myers’ Firewater, 2011). Thanks to this festival I met them seeing their name in the line up (festivals that would be a dream to see for myself, there will be practically all the artists I adore from Whiskey Myers, the Steel Woods, the mythological Ray Wylie Hubbard, the outlaw Whitey Morgan, the fantastic Shane Smith & The Saints, to quote the first ones that come to mind.) Events like this or many live events have fueled this word of mouth between fans of independent country rock music, which has had a surge thanks to this record where the fun and talent is certainly not lacking. There is also room for a beautiful country ballad, Good Times, with that melancholy vein that is typical of the genre, the voice is very convincing, Joe Stamm seems born to be the lead singer of a country band and the irony of the following Blame It on the Dog is further confirmation. Beautiful the final solo and the rhythm always on the piece. You leave nothing to the imagination among the wild riffs of Pearl to Pigs a declaration of love for the anti-commercial country music and his land Texas (and a declaration of hatred for pop-country Kane Brown-style, with which they agree) and intense ballads, where there is also a keyboard like Bottle You Up. On the other hand, there are the wild honky tonk notes such as the final Tough Times, Hard Luck, where the guitars run at full speed and the fun and the desire to dance are assured. The band composed of a boy who dreamed of becoming a professional quarterback and instead has a talent and a voice that country rock lovers will love, gives us an exciting debut (assisted by the rest of the group : Jon Byler Dann on bass, Bruce Moser on drums and Dave Glover on the other guitar) that will last in time and certainly after the festivals in which they will participate will allow a deserved increase in word of mouth and fans unleashed. Sharing the stage with artists like Reckless Kelly, Randy Rogers, Blackberry Smoke, Kristofferson and Willie Nelson, has certainly allowed their sound to mature and blend country, rock, red dirt, has allowed Joe Stamm to coin a new term for the music you will hear coming out of the speakers : black dirt country, a sound inspired by their homeland where winters are lashed by a brutal cold and summers are hot as hell. All this is real life, love for one’s origins and a lot of talent. We look forward to hearing the following of this beautiful record, Midwest Town that will be released in September 2021, in the meantime get comfortable and get carried away on this guitar trip in the Midwest country, you will not regret it.

Good listening,
